<image:title>About Us - It began in 1972…</image:title>
<image:caption>Ridgeway Nursery School and Kindergarten was established in 1972 as an outreach of the Ridgeway Alliance Church to the community. We are a non-for-profit school welcoming children of all races, creeds and ethnic origins. The aim of the early childhood program is to help each child gain a positive self-image while encouraging social, emotional, intellectual, physical and spiritual development. The environment is child-centered, where a wide range of experiences are available to stimulate curiosity and development at various levels. We recognize play and direct exploration as basic learning tools for early childhood learners.</image:caption>

<image:caption>ekelly@ridgewaynsk.com This is Mrs. Kelly’s sixth year at Ridgeway Nursery School & Kindergarten. She studied Childhood and Special Education at Marist College. She received her Masters degree in Early Childhood Education at Manhattanville College while also working as a head teacher at Ridge Street Country School. Mrs. Kelly has worked as not only a Kindergarten teacher, but a 4’s and 1st grade teacher as well. She believes that an important part about being an early childhood teacher is to create a small and mighty community within the classroom. When she is not teaching, Mrs. Kelly enjoys spending time with family and friends. Her love of children is evident as is her passion for teaching. We are very happy to have Mrs. Kelly as part of the RNSK family! Mrs. Kelly works in partnership with Mrs. Barbara Klein.</image:caption>

<image:title>Meet the Director - A message from the Director…</image:title>
<image:caption>Dear Ridgeway families, Welcome to RNSK where we are dedicated to creating a safe environment tailored to the educational, emotional and spiritual needs of our children. At our school we utilize productive play through theme based units to foster learning. We have a Christ-centered curriculum to share love through our actions, songs, bible stories and prayer. Our staff are highly educated lead teachers with a strong support staff of assistants. I am honored to be entrusted with directorship of Ridgeway after teaching early childhood and elementary aged students in both Westchester County and NYC. Working with children feels so much more meaningful than any other way I could spend my day. I view each day as a blessing to work with our Ridgeway families to create a strong partnership and ensure an outstanding first school experience. I am looking forward to an incredible school year ahead. Sincerely, Kimberly Emmert Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.</image:caption>

<image:title>Two Program - A Typical Day in the Two Year Old Program</image:title>
<image:caption>Children start their day by playing on our beautiful playground or in our big room. The teachers then have their first circle time where the children sing songs, talk about the season and weather, and explore shapes, numbers and letters. After snack time, which is served family style, the children have free choice to play in the dramatic play area, block area, puzzles, and library area. Children also complete art projects during this time. The second circle time is where the lesson of the day is taught or a book is read, based on the weekly theme. Following this circle time, half day children are dismissed. In the afternoon, two-year-old children have song and movement time. They eat lunch in the classroom, which is provided by the school. After lunch, the children nap in a relaxed environment with dimmed lighting and soothing music. After napping they have a snack and get ready for dismissal.</image:caption>

<image:title>Three Program - 3’s Program</image:title>
<image:caption>In the 3’s program we recognize play and direct exploration as basic learning tools for our students. Play experiences designed to facilitate learning in the school setting are basic to the early childhood curriculum. Through play, children express and develop themselves socially, emotionally, cognitively, and spiritually. Our knowledge of child development serves as a guide for providing appropriate and meaningful activities in art, music, math, science, literacy, language, and basic reading readiness skills. Students begin to learn letters through name recognition, build fine motor skills through scissor skills practice, playdough and crafts, and practice writing through various mediums. Our age appropriate Bible curriculum helps students understand who God is. We pray before snack and lunch, and sing songs about God. Parents may chose from the following schedules: 3 Half Days - T/W/Th, 9:00am - 11:30am 3 Full Days - T/W/Th, 9:00am - 3:00pm 5 Half Days - M-F, 9:00am - 11:30am 5 Full Days - M-F, 9:00am - 3:00pm Early Drop Off: We offer three options if you need to drop your child off before 9am: 7:30am, 8:00am or 8:30am. There is limited space in early drop off so it is first come, first served upon registration. Extended Day: Lunch Bunch is available from 11:30-1:00pm. After-School Programs: Afternoon Enrichment (AE) - 3:00pm - 4:30pm Kids Club (KC) - 3:00pm - 5:30pm For more information on these programs please click here.</image:caption>

<image:title>Three Program - A typical day in the 3’s</image:title>
<image:caption>Children start the day with free play that consists of different learning centers throughout the room, based on the theme of the week. The free play centers include library, art, easel, dramatic play, blocks, puzzles, play dough, and math and science. During the first circle time they count their friends, talk about the weather, sing a morning song and prayer, and review the calendar. Snack is served family style where the children help to set up for snack. After snack, the children have gross motor play outside on our beautiful playground or inside at one of our two indoor play spaces. Upon returning to the classroom, children sit for a second circle time. This is when the lesson of the day is taught, or a book is read. Our program is theme based. Examples of a 3-year-old themes are Apples, Weather, Feelings, etc. Children also engage in free book time where they explore different genres of books, learning to explore and manipulate books correctly. At the end of the morning, a goodbye song is sung and the half day children are dismissed.</image:caption>

Children are taught letters and their sounds, numbers, shapes, colors, and following directions. Lessons in literacy, math or social studies are taught through weekly themes. Being able to recognize his/her name, the names of classmates, finding specific letters in words, and creating word charts using letter sounds are all part of the activities we will focus on. Children will continue to expand their understanding of mathematical concepts and numbers daily. Discussing the calendar and taking attendance each day allows for counting, number recognition, and patterning practice.</image:caption>

<image:caption>When the children enter the classroom it is free play time. Children can explore at the literacy, writing, science, math, art, sensory table, playdough, dramatic play, or easel center. At each center children are immersed in literacy, math, and science. During the first circle time they do a morning song and prayer, explore the weather, and discuss different parts of the calendar (date, month, and day of the week). Children also recite the pledge of allegiance, and count and compare attendance. Children then have snack served family style. Children then engage in free book time where they explore and apply newly learned reading strategies. After book time, there is a second circle where the lesson of the day is taught. The lesson of the day could be a literacy, math, science, or bible lesson. After circle time, the children have gross motor play outside on our beautiful playground or inside at either one of our two indoor play spaces. Upon returning to the classroom, half day children are dismissed.</image:caption>

<image:title>Kindergarten Program</image:title>
<image:caption>Our transitional kindergarten program seeks to develop the interests and abilities of each child. While individualizing instruction, we follow the New York State Common Core Learning Standards for kindergarten. RNSK tailors relevant curriculum according to the needs of each child. It is our goal to foster creativity, individualize instruction according to need, and help each child realize his/her own potential, all while insuring they are prepared for moving on to public or private elementary school. These objectives are best achieved through explicit small group and individual instruction. Children are also provided opportunities to learn through discovery. Our kindergarten program is designed to broaden the awareness of self, of others, and the environment, while providing opportunities for the development of readiness skills. Parents may choose the following schedules: 3 Full Days T/W/Th, 2 Half Days M/F - 9:00am-3:00pm/11:30am 5 Full Days (M-F) - 9:00am - 3:00pm Early Drop Off: We offer three options if you need to drop your child off before 9am: 7:30am, 8:00am or 8:30am. <image:caption>mthomas@ridgewaynsk.com Mrs. Thomas is so excited to be returning to Ridgeway Nursery School and Kindergarten this year! Mrs. Thomas has been involved in Early Childhood Education for the last 10 years and this school year marks her 5th year as a Head Teacher. She has her Masters in Early Childhood Education from Lehman College. Mrs. Thomas has worked in a diverse population of schools in Manhattan and the Bronx. She loves Early Childhood because it's inspiring to see children learn new topics and share in their wonder and curiosity. She loves to encourage this curiosity by teaching through hands-on play because that is the way children learn best. In her spare time, Mrs. Thomas enjoys baking, reading and taking walks with her husband and son. Mrs. Thomas works in partnership with Miss Hannah Chee, Ms. Maria Guevara, and Ms. Ruth Bello.</image:caption>
